Day one – Cape Town to George
It is our first day of travelling. We departed at 09h30 this morning from Rovos Rail Station in Cape Town. Our 32 golfers on board are all very excited! First stop for golf is the absolutely amazing Fancourt Links. It is a true test for any golfer. More about that next time I’m back here…
This is the route between Paarl and Robertson. What a stunning view of the “Groot Swart Berge” (Great Black Mountains) in the background. The tracks curve through the beautiful winelands of the Western Cape all the way from the scenic Hex River Valley to Ashton towards the midway point on the Garden Route, George. Robertson is home to one of our favorite wines on the list, the Springfield Wholeberry. A stunning Cabernet Sauvignon, it is luscious and juicy as they say on the estate. At 16h00 we are doing a quick stop at Zandvliet Wine Estate, home of the very popular Shiraz here in South Africa. It is situated on the infamous Route 62 and the first plantings date back to 1870. Oh, and it’s on our menu too.
I’ll be back tomorrow with some news from the Fancourt Links, home of the 2003 Presidents Cup that ended up in a draw between Ernie Els and Tiger Woods in sudden death. The captains don’t need any introduction, Jack and Gary… It was very special and most South Africans were on the edge of their seats. None of us can wait to walk the fairways of the links tomorrow.
